Updated October 2026. This CatholicMatch review looks at how the site works, what is free, what you pay for, and who is likely to enjoy it, in plain language and without hype. If you are asking "how does Catholic Match work?" or "is Catholic Match free?", the short answers are: it is a Catholic-only dating service that matches on faith and temperament, and joining is free but a paid plan is needed for full use. This is an independent review. We have no partnership with CatholicMatch and we earn nothing from it. Some of the alternatives we mention at the end are our partners, and we may earn a commission if you sign up through our links. That does not change what we say. How does CatholicMatch work?
CatholicMatch describes its approach as combining temperament profiling with advanced search. It calls the profiling tool Match Portrait. You answer questions about yourself and about your Catholic faith. Reviewers describe those questions as covering things like your diocese, how often you attend Mass, how observant you consider yourself and what you expect in a partner. You can then search and filter on your own, or look at suggested profiles.
The site also offers an app for iPhone and Android, and a library of articles, talks and courses on faith and relationships for paying members (the company calls its premium tier CM+). Over the years it has also run events such as virtual speed dating, according to the app's version history and its own announcements. We did not test those events, so we cannot say how popular or useful they are now.
How many members does CatholicMatch have?
We could not verify a current member count. CatholicMatch calls itself the largest and most trusted Catholic dating site in the world and refers to "thousands of confirmed marriages," but it does not publish a recent total. A post on its own blog from September 2013 announced one million registered members, which is a count of registrations over time, not of people active today. Treat any member number as marketing. What matters for you is how many active Catholic members live within reach, and you can check that by searching for free before you pay.
Is CatholicMatch free?
Partly. Joining, building a profile and browsing are free. What else is free is described differently in different places. The developer's App Store description says it offers free sign-up, matching and messaging, while other reviewers and older CatholicMatch articles say that free members cannot start conversations or reply to messages unless they subscribe, and at times free members could read messages after a delay. Because the rules have changed over time, check what you can actually do on a free account before you decide. A good test is to create a profile, run a search in your area and see what the message screen offers.
Paid plans are subscriptions that renew automatically unless you turn off renewal. If you subscribe through Apple, you manage renewal in your Apple account settings. If you subscribe on the website, check the terms on the site. CatholicMatch has also advertised a guarantee in the past under which qualified members could receive a free extension if they did not meet someone during a six-month subscription. We could not confirm the current terms, so read them before you rely on this.
CatholicMatch price: what you pay
As listed on the Apple App Store in October 2026 (check the site for current prices):
- 1 month: $29.99.
- 6 months: $89.99, which is about $15 a month.
- 12 months: $119.99, which is about $10 a month.
A third-party review published in 2026 lists lower per-month figures for the longer plans, and notes that promotions change them. As always, the price you see at signup is the one that counts.
How to get the most from CatholicMatch
If you decide to try it, a little preparation goes a long way. Fill in the faith questions honestly rather than choosing the answers you think others want to see. Write a profile that says how you live your faith in ordinary life, and add a recent, natural photo. Send a short, personal first message that refers to something in the other person's profile, not a copied greeting. Give conversations a couple of weeks, then suggest a phone or video call before you meet in a public place.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Shared faith from the start. Everyone is on the site because they want a Catholic partner, or at least a partner who takes the faith seriously.
- Faith-focused questions. You can see Mass attendance and diocese, not just hobbies.
- Content on dating and faith. Paying members can read articles and watch talks about discernment and relationships.
- Straightforward subscription tiers. Longer plans are cheaper per month.
Cons
- Mixed user reviews. The App Store rating is around 3.9 out of 5 from several thousand ratings. Positive reviews mention a successful engagement and an easy interface. Negative reviews mention inactive profiles, unanswered messages, possible fake accounts, weak search and cost.
- Pool size depends on where you live. Outside large cities, the number of members aged 50+ nearby may be small.
- Not aimed at seniors. It is open to adults 18 and over, so you will see younger members.
- Free access is limited. You may need to pay before you can message.
We have no insight into success rates, and we will not quote any. Look at success stories on the site with a critical eye, and remember that individual stories do not tell you your chances.
Who is CatholicMatch best for?
- Practicing Catholics who want a partner who attends Mass and shares their views on the Church.
- People in or near cities and larger dioceses, where the pool is likely to be bigger.
- Readers who are patient and willing to message several people over months.
It may be less suited to you if you are open to any Christian partner, if you live in a very rural area, or if you want a site built around your age group. If you are widowed, our guide to Catholic widower dating covers readiness and family. If you are divorced and thinking about an annulment, see dating after annulment.
Alternatives to CatholicMatch
Many people use CatholicMatch together with a mainstream site. These are our partners, and the figures below are as stated by the sites:
| Site | Best for | According to the site |
|---|---|---|
| eHarmony | Serious, marriage-minded daters | About 15M members, ages 30+, free profile, known for serious relationships |
| SilverSingles | Meeting people over 50 | About 11M members, ages 50+, free to explore |
| Christian Mingle | A broad Christian community | About 15M members, ages 20+, free to start, faith-based |
Among Catholic-specific alternatives, which are independent and not our partners, there is also Sacred Spark, a newer app, and Ave Maria Singles, which describes a one-time fee. Our best Catholic dating sites page compares them all.
Our verdict
CatholicMatch is a reasonable option if you want a Catholic-only community and can find active members near you. It is not perfect, and some users report frustration with inactive profiles and with paying to message. Our practical advice: create a free profile, search your area, read what a free account allows, and only then choose a plan, ideally starting with a shorter one if you are unsure. Use it alongside parish life, as we describe in Catholic dating over 50, and stay careful about scams. Never send money to someone you have not met in person.
